Ivory Coast secured Africa’s first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 win over Ecuador in Philadelphia, keeping alive their hopes of reaching the tournament’s knockout stage for the first time.
The breakthrough came in the closing moments of the Group E clash when Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored a 90th-minute winner to end Ecuador’s resistance and hand the African champions a crucial three points.
For much of the contest, Ecuador’s disciplined defence frustrated Ivory Coast, while the South Americans also threatened to snatch the lead. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the woodwork in an entertaining first half, highlighting Ecuador’s attacking intent.
Ivory Coast responded strongly after the break. Elye Wahi rattled the crossbar, while Seko Fofana tested goalkeeper Hernan Galindez as the match remained finely balanced.
Just when the game appeared destined for a goalless draw, Diallo made the difference. Introduced as a second-half substitute, he connected with Wilfried Singo’s low cross and calmly side-footed home the decisive goal, sending Ivorian fans into celebration.
The victory marks Ivory Coast’s first World Cup win since defeating Japan at the 2014 tournament in Brazil and strengthens their chances of progressing beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.
The result also provides a welcome boost for Africa at the tournament following South Africa’s defeat to Mexico and Morocco’s draw against Brazil.
Ivory Coast will now prepare for a challenging Group E encounter against Germany in Toronto, while Ecuador face Curacao as both teams continue their quest for a place in the last 16.
For Ecuador, the defeat was a painful one after another disciplined display. Despite arriving at the World Cup with one of South America’s best defensive records, they were ultimately undone by a single moment of brilliance from Diallo, whose late heroics could prove pivotal in Ivory Coast’s campaign.
