Aston Villa ended Manchester City’s unbeaten Premier League run with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Villa Park on Saturday, while Tottenham Hotspur defeated 10-man Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Nicolas Jackson scored twice to hand Villa all three points and inflict City’s first Premier League defeat of the season.
Jackson put the hosts ahead just six minutes into the match before City responded in the second half through Erling Haaland, whose headed effort restored parity.
However, Jackson struck again to beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and seal a crucial victory for Villa.
The defeat ended City’s perfect start to the Premier League campaign. Pep Guardiola’s side have now lost on their past four visits to Villa Park.
Villa have won five and drawn one of their past six games in all competitions, with new signings Jackson, Johan Manzambi and Zion Suzuki quickly settling in to help mitigate the loss of Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Emi Martinez.
Spurs Beat 10-Man Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
Tottenham Hotspur secured their second successive Premier League win with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, handing the Blues their first home defeat against their London rivals since 2018.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders’ second-half error helped Tottenham take control of the rain-lashed encounter before Mathys Tel produced a superb solo effort to seal the victory.
Chelsea’s afternoon worsened in the 80th minute when Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving a second booking, leaving the hosts with 10 men.
The victory ended Tottenham’s miserable run away to Chelsea, having won just once in their previous 41 away matches against their London rivals in all competitions since 1990.
It also marked Tottenham’s second win in their last 16 league meetings with Chelsea, home and away, and their first since 2023.
After a dismal start to the season, Tottenham have climbed to 12th place, building on Monday’s win against Coventry that ended their wait for a first league victory of the campaign.
The defeat was a setback for fourth-placed Chelsea, who had beaten Bournemouth and Everton in their previous two league matches.
Chelsea were booed off at full-time as their inconsistent start continued under Xabi Alonso, who is in his first season in charge of the club.
