Mastercard Backs Tinubu’s Reforms, Targets Millions of Nigerians With Digital Investment

 

Global payments technology company Mastercard has expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, unveiling plans for major digital investments aimed at expanding opportunities for millions of Nigerians.

During a visit to President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Mastercard Chief Executive Officer, , praised the administration for improving macroeconomic stability through stronger coordination between fiscal and monetary policies.

Miebach said the reforms are creating a more attractive environment for investment and helping to strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

Highlighting Mastercard’s impact in the country, he revealed that the company helps prevent about $200 million in fraud annually and facilitates approximately $2 billion in foreign exchange inflows into Nigeria.

As part of its commitment to Nigeria’s digital transformation, Mastercard announced plans to deepen its partnership with the Federal Government through investments focused on cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and business growth.

One of the key proposals is the establishment of a Cyber Centre of Excellence to strengthen cyber resilience, improve threat intelligence sharing, and address emerging risks linked to artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

The company also plans to launch a three-year programme that will provide digital skills training for five million Nigerian small and medium-sized enterprises, helping them compete more effectively in the digital economy.

Responding to the proposals, President Tinubu welcomed Mastercard’s continued investment interest and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting innovation, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment.

The President described Nigeria’s young population as a major strength, noting that Nigerian youths possess the creativity and technological skills needed to thrive in the global digital economy.

The meeting reflects growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s reform agenda and reinforces the country’s position as an emerging hub for digital innovation and financial technology in Africa.
