Nigeria and the Netherlands have strengthened their economic and security ties with a fresh trade facilitation agreement aimed at boosting commerce, enhancing border security and tackling transnational organised crime.
The deal was reached in Brussels on June 24, 2026, during a meeting between the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Director-General of Netherlands Customs, Nanette van Schelven.
Under the agreement, both customs administrations will work together to facilitate legitimate trade, improve intelligence sharing, strengthen enforcement operations and build capacity to address emerging challenges in global trade and border management.
Adeniyi described the pact as a major milestone in Nigeria Customs’ international cooperation efforts, noting that the Netherlands has demonstrated the importance of cross-border collaboration in securing supply chains while promoting trade.
According to him, the partnership will deepen intelligence exchange, enhance operational effectiveness and support efforts to combat transnational organised crime without disrupting lawful business activities.
Van Schelven said both countries face similar challenges in an increasingly interconnected trading environment, stressing that closer cooperation would encourage knowledge sharing, strengthen operational capabilities and improve the fight against cross-border criminal networks.
The agreement reflects the growing relationship between Nigeria and the Netherlands and underscores a shared commitment to safer borders, stronger trade links and more efficient customs operations.
