Heavy rainfall and flash floods have displaced many families and damaged homes across parts of Yobe State, with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirming that several communities in three local government areas have been affected.
In a flash flood incident report released on Sunday, SEMA said it received multiple distress calls from community leaders, security agencies and local government authorities after torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding in the affected areas.
According to the agency, the affected communities include Moduri, Abbari Sabon Kwalta, Malari Sabon Kwalta, Pompomari, Sumsumma, Nayinawa and surrounding areas in Damaturu LGA, as well as New Side, Best Center, Balanguwa Road and several communities across nine wards in Nguru LGA.
The agency also confirmed that Turbangini and Dinani/Lawanti Ward in Bursari LGA, along with Alhaji Madi Street, Hausari and Machina town in Machina LGA, were impacted by the flooding.
SEMA noted that the current list only includes communities that have been officially reported and verified, adding that additional affected locations may be identified as assessment teams continue their work.
Preliminary assessments indicate that numerous homes suffered varying degrees of damage, while many families have been displaced by the floods.
The agency said the exact number of affected households, displaced persons and any injuries is still being verified.
SEMA assured residents that comprehensive assessment findings would be released to support timely emergency response and recovery efforts.
The agency also advised residents to take extra precautions during the rainy season by remaining indoors in safe buildings, avoiding unnecessary travel, and staying away from flood-prone areas, riverbanks, drainage channels and other low-lying locations.
