The Project Coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), alongside members of the technical team, has visited Ireland to strengthen professional collaboration and gain practical insights into advanced environmental remediation technologies that could improve ongoing remediation efforts in Ogoniland.
The working visit, held from Thursday, August 13 to Saturday, August 16, 2026, included technical sessions at the headquarters of Verdé Environmental Group in Dublin, where the HYPREP team engaged environmental experts on site characterisation, contaminant delineation, hydrogeological investigations, environmental monitoring, risk assessment and remediation technologies.
The team also undertook a guided tour of the Roche Clarecastle remediation site in Southern Ireland, a €500 million project described as Europe’s largest single remediation project and managed by the Verdé Group.
The Roche remediation project commenced in 2020 and covers a 37-hectare site. Different remediation methods are being applied across various sections of the site, depending on the contaminants of concern and their concentrations.
The technologies deployed include Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE), a vacuum extraction process used for soil and groundwater remediation to remove contaminants; In-Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT), which uses heating probes to treat contamination; and Ex-Situ Thermal Treatment (ESTT), involving the excavation of contaminated earth materials and their transportation to Holland for treatment at a licensed thermal treatment facility.
A European consortium comprising Indaver, Veolia, Haemers and Verdé, the Project Environmental Managing Consultants, is executing the remediation project.
Verdé Environmental Group operates across environmental consulting, environmental compliance, planning and licensing, oil spill cleanup and remediation services, clean energy technology and renewables, solar PV and retrofits, construction dewatering and energy sustainability.
Verdé Africa is currently conducting site characterisation of some HYPREP’s high-risk and complex remediation sites in Ogoniland, making the Ireland engagement particularly relevant to the project’s ongoing environmental restoration efforts.
The visit provided HYPREP with an opportunity to learn from international best practices, strengthen professional collaboration, exchange technical knowledge and gain practical insights into advanced remediation approaches.
Lessons from the engagement are expected to support the ongoing characterisation and assessment of high-risk hydrocarbon-contaminated sites in Ogoniland, as well as the soil and groundwater remediation activities that will follow.
The engagement underscores HYPREP’s commitment to strengthening technical capacity, adopting appropriate remediation technologies and improving the quality and sustainability of environmental remediation projects in Ogoniland.
