Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed confidence that all 36 State Houses of Assembly will approve the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police, describing the proposed reform as a product of broad national consensus.
Abiodun made the remarks in a statement posted on his Facebook page after participating in the Arise Television Town Hall Meeting on State Policing on Thursday.
According to the governor, the widespread consultations and support that preceded the proposed legislation have strengthened confidence that state legislatures across the country will simultaneously endorse the bill.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for transmitting the Executive Bill to the National Assembly and praised lawmakers and other stakeholders for advancing what he described as a landmark reform aimed at improving Nigeria’s security system.
As chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Committee on the Creation of State Police, Abiodun said the committee worked closely with state governors and key stakeholders to develop a framework for the proposed policing structure.
He explained that the framework is designed to strengthen community policing, improve internal security, create employment opportunities and enhance Nigeria’s police-to-citizen ratio.
The governor added that the establishment of state police, backed by a robust legal and operational framework, would strengthen the country’s security architecture while promoting professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
