In a surprising decision that has sparked widespread debate in African football, Cameroon has left out seasoned stars André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar from its final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, “André Onana and Vincent Aboubakar have been left out of the Cameroon squad for the AFCON,” he reported on Monday.
The decision marks a major shakeup for the Indomitable Lions, ahead of one of Africa’s biggest football tournaments.
The absence of Onana, a goalkeeper who has played at top European clubs, and Aboubakar, the veteran forward and long-serving captain, signals a new direction under the team’s refreshed leadership.
The squad list also reflects a broader generational shift as younger and less-established players are given the chance to stake their claim ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
Reports indicate that Onana has joined Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
