The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of abducted retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar while in terrorists’ captivity, describing the development as a painful loss to the nation and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, expressing deep sorrow over the former military spokesperson’s death.
According to Uba, the military deliberately refrained from making public comments about the abduction to avoid compromising ongoing rescue efforts. He noted that all available operational resources were deployed by the armed forces and other security agencies in a bid to secure the retired general’s safe release.
“The DHQ regrets to announce the passing of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who tragically lost his life in captivity following his abduction,” Uba said.
He extended condolences to the family, associates and Nigerians, describing Abubakar as a distinguished officer who served the country with honour, professionalism and dedication in several strategic appointments.
Uba recalled that the late officer served as spokesperson for various military formations and later as Director of Defence Information, where he played a key role in projecting the activities and operations of the military.
He added that Abubakar made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations, personnel development and national security initiatives, noting that his commitment to duty and national unity would remain a source of inspiration.
The DHQ said the incident has further strengthened the military’s resolve to intensify operations against terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements across the country.
Uba stated that ongoing security operations have been reinforced in response to rising cases of abductions and violent attacks, reaffirming the military’s commitment to dismantling terrorist networks, restoring peace and ensuring those responsible for acts of terrorism are brought to justice.
