Malawi’s Scorchers produced one of the biggest upsets in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) history on Tuesday night, defeating defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons 3-2 in a thrilling five-goal encounter in Rabat.
Making their WAFCON debut, the Scorchers stunned the 10-time African champions with a fearless display, inspired by sisters Themwa and Tabitha Chawinga, who scored all three goals to hand Malawi a memorable victory.
Themwa Chawinga gave Malawi an early advantage before doubling the lead before halftime, putting Nigeria under intense pressure.
Tabitha Chawinga then added the third goal after the break to strengthen Malawi’s grip on the match and complete a remarkable performance by the Chawinga sisters.
The Super Falcons responded through captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who pulled one back to revive Nigeria’s hopes, while substitute Uchenna Kanu added a second goal late in the game. However, Malawi held firm to secure a famous 3-2 victory.
The defeat is a major setback for Coach Justine Madugu’s side, who began the tournament as defending champions and favourites to win an 11th WAFCON title.
For Malawi, the victory marks a dream debut at the continental championship and significantly boosts their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
The result also sends a strong message to the rest of the competition that the Scorchers are capable of challenging Africa’s established football powers.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to a crucial Group stage clash against Zambia’s Copper Queens, knowing that victory is essential to keep their title defence on track.
Malawi, meanwhile, will look to build on their historic win as they continue their impressive maiden WAFCON campaign.
