Growing up, Dr. Abiola witnessed firsthand the impact of poor waste management, flooding, and environmental degradation on Nigerian communities—an experience that fueled her passion for environmental sustainability.
“My passion for environmental sustainability was born out of a deep awareness of the direct link between environmental health and human wellbeing. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how poor waste management, flooding, and environmental degradation affected livelihoods, public health, and economic stability in our communities. That experience shaped my resolve to be part of the solution,” she said.
Today, as the CEO of ZL Global Alliance (Nig.) Ltd and Programme Coordinator of the Nigeria Climate Smart Agronomy Programme (NC-SAP), Dr. Abiola has turned that passion into action. Her work focuses on transforming environmental challenges into opportunities for growth and sustainability. This includes integrated waste management systems that prioritize environmental protection and economic value, climate-resilient agricultural practices at a national scale, and community empowerment initiatives that drive sustainable development.
Achieving Net-Zero by 2060
Dr. Abiola emphasizes that Nigeria’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 requires a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach. Key strategies include transitioning to renewable energy through expanded solar, wind, and hydro infrastructure; promoting sustainable agriculture through climate-smart practices; implementing efficient waste management systems that convert waste to energy and enhance recycling; strengthening environmental policies with incentives for green investment; and building capacity by educating citizens and stakeholders on sustainable practices.
“The private sector plays a critical role as a driver of innovation, investment, and implementation. Companies must adopt sustainable practices and invest in green technologies. Public-private partnerships are essential for financing large-scale projects efficiently,” she added.
Innovative Waste Management and Community Impact
Under Dr. Abiola’s leadership, ZL Global Alliance has implemented innovative waste management projects, including integrated waste collection and recycling systems that sort waste at source and convert it into reusable materials, waste-to-wealth programmes that empower youth and women in local recycling value chains, and landfill management systems designed to minimize hazards and optimize land use.
“The impact has been significant: cleaner communities, reduced environmental pollution, job creation, and increased public awareness about responsible waste disposal. Beyond environmental benefits, these initiatives have contributed to improved public health and local economic development,” she said.
Advice to Young Nigerians and Women
Dr. Abiola encourages young people, particularly women, to pursue careers in environmental sustainability and green energy. She advises them to acquire relevant education and technical skills, seek mentorship and supportive networks, remain innovative in solving local challenges, and stay persistent despite barriers.
“Women, in particular, have a vital role to play in shaping sustainable solutions. Your participation is not only important—it is essential for inclusive and impactful development,” she emphasized.
Africa’s Renewable Energy Potential
Africa is uniquely positioned to become a global leader in renewable energy due to its vast solar, wind, and hydro resources. Dr. Abiola believes that realizing this potential requires investment in decentralized renewable energy infrastructure, promotion of local manufacturing, stronger policy frameworks, enhanced regional collaboration, and community empowerment to drive job creation and improved livelihoods.
“By doing so, Africa can address energy poverty, stimulate industrial growth, and achieve sustainable development goals,” she said.

“Nigeria and Africa represent one of the most promising frontiers for green energy investment globally,” Dr. Abiola said.
She highlighted key advantages, including a rapidly growing population and market demand, abundant renewable energy resources, increasing policy support for sustainability initiatives, and opportunities for high-impact, scalable investments.
“Partnerships that combine global capital with local knowledge will yield the most sustainable and profitable outcomes. Africa should be seen not just as a beneficiary, but as a strategic partner in driving the global green transition. Together, we can build resilient systems that benefit both people and the planet.”
