FAAN intensifies airport surveillance over Ebola outbreak concerns

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has assured travellers and stakeholders that strict preventive measures have been activated across Nigeria’s international airports following renewed concerns over the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in parts of Central Africa.

The agency said it has strengthened passenger surveillance, health screening, and emergency response procedures in collaboration with relevant health authorities to prevent any possible spread of the virus into the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, FAAN said it is working closely with the Port Health Services, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and other stakeholders to improve monitoring at airports.

According to the statement, passengers arriving from countries classified as high-risk are undergoing enhanced screening procedures, while health officials have been placed on alert.

The agency explained that travellers are being screened for Ebola-related symptoms and that any suspected case would immediately be isolated for further medical examination in line with national and international health protocols.

Agbebire said the measures are aimed at reassuring Nigerians and the international travelling community that the country’s airports remain safe despite growing health concerns in parts of Central Africa.

He added that FAAN has also increased sensitization among airport workers and reinforced emergency response systems to ensure quick action in the event of any health-related emergency.

The agency urged passengers to remain calm, cooperate with health officials during screening processes, and promptly report any unusual symptoms while travelling.

FAAN further noted that although there is currently no confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria, the authority remains vigilant and committed to protecting public health and ensuring safe airport operations.
