Supporters of Peter Obi have been urged to remain calm after a Federal High Court in Lokoja voided the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with the former presidential candidate’s media team describing the ruling as a temporary setback rather than the end of the movement.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), through its spokesperson, Idris Zekeri Jnr, said the coalition had begun reviewing the judgment and would immediately pursue legal remedies, including an appeal.
The group described the court’s decision as a hurdle, insisting it would not derail its commitment to building what it called a credible political alternative for Nigerians.
“We have received the news of today’s ruling from the court in Lokoja regarding the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC),” the statement said.
According to POMR, its legal team is examining the judgment to initiate corrective and appellate measures while urging supporters, coalition partners and Nigerians to remain calm and focused.
The organisation said it had anticipated challenges in its efforts to confront the country’s political establishment.
“We always knew that the journey to dismantle a deeply entrenched and underperforming political status quo would face institutional resistance and legal obstacles. Today’s ruling is a hurdle, not a stop sign,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to the “New Nigeria” movement, POMR maintained that its political platform remains strong and that every legal avenue would be explored to protect its rights.
It also encouraged supporters not to lose hope, saying the movement’s destination remained unchanged despite the temporary setback.
Earlier on Thursday, the Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside its previous order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), leaving the proposed political party without legal recognition for the time being.
