#OccupyINEC demonstration in Abuja on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, brought together the country’s top opposition figures.
At the demonstration were leaders and members of the African Democratic Party, who stormed the INEC office to protest its decision not to recognize any faction of the ADC until the High court gave its verdict on a pending case in Abuja.
The protest which started at Maitama round about were Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, and Dino Melaye while various group within the opposition, like the Kwankwasiyya members also participated.
The protest saw participants singing Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots!”, despite the fact that it was replaced on May 29, 2024, by President Bola Tinubu with the country’s 1960 independence anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
Also ,demonstrators held placards supporting Senator David Mark, including ones that read, “In David Mark’s NWC we trust.”
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi, addressing the protest spoke on behalf of ADC members and other opposition leaders, urging Nigerians to defend the country’s democracy.
He said on X: “We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed.
“We reject a one-party system! Today, we call on all Nigerians who value unity, peace, and national security to stand with us in defending democracy”.
