The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Wednesday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election gathered momentum.
Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, shared photographs of the meeting on X but did not disclose the location or the issues discussed.
“Earlier today, the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo,” Umoh wrote while sharing the images.
The meeting came just days after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accused Obasanjo of making false allegations against him to advance the political interests of his kinsman ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Although Atiku did not name the individual, the allegation was widely seen as a reference to President Bola Tinubu, who is seeking a second term and shares the same Yoruba ethnic background as Obasanjo.
The latest political development follows Obasanjo’s allegation on January 23 that Atiku gave the late former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, ₦5 million to initiate impeachment proceedings against him during his first term as president.
Obasanjo’s claim sparked a fresh war of words between the two political heavyweights, with Atiku rejecting the allegation and accusing the former president of making false claims.
While the purpose of Wednesday’s meeting between Obi and Obasanjo was not disclosed, it comes amid growing political realignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.
