Four children have tragically died in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area, Borno State, following an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), the police have confirmed.
According to Police Public Relations Officer ASP Keneth Daso, the explosion occurred on Friday at approximately 12:40 p.m. behind Banki Motor Park in Wajari Ward.
The police reported that the explosion occurred as a 12-year-old boy, Mustapha Tijja, played with four friends inside a makeshift structure behind the motor park. The improvised explosive device (IED), reportedly discovered in the bush, accidentally detonated. Mustapha was rushed to the FHI 360 Clinic, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The four children who lost their lives have been identified as Awana Mustapha, 15; Malum Modu, 14; and Lawan Ibrahim and Modu Abacha, both aged 12.
The police have restored normalcy in the area, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Abdulmajid urged residents to avoid handling unfamiliar objects and to report any suspicious items to authorities immediately.
