United Kingdom Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, bringing a dramatic end to his tenure at Downing Street amid growing political pressure and calls for new leadership within the governing party.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said every decision he made in office was driven by what he believed was best for the country.
“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said as he confirmed his departure from both the premiership and the Labour Party leadership.
Starmer revealed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and directed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader. Nominations for the leadership contest are expected to open on July 9, with a successor due to be in place before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September. He will remain as caretaker prime minister during the transition period.
The resignation follows weeks of mounting unrest within the Labour Party, fueled by declining public support, internal disagreements and growing concerns over the government’s political direction. Pressure intensified after a major by-election victory by Andy Burnham in North West England, strengthening calls for a change in leadership ahead of Parliament’s return.
Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide election victory in 2024, has faced increasing criticism over policy reversals, cabinet unrest and disappointing electoral performances. His departure now sets the stage for a closely watched leadership transition that could reshape the future of British politics and determine Labour’s prospects ahead of the next general election.
