US President Donald Trump has said he is considering firing Kimberly Guilfoyle as US ambassador to Greece following reports that she asked a businessman to wire $100,000 to settle her American Express bill.
“Well, we’re looking at it,” Trump told reporters while travelling to Ohio when asked whether he was considering firing Guilfoyle. “We’re not happy.”
Businessman Eric Deters told CBS News that he had “no doubt it was pay-to-play” after Guilfoyle allegedly requested the money in exchange for assistance with the Trump administration ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing.
Deters provided CBS News with screenshots of text messages between him and Guilfoyle, including one in which she appeared to request a wire transfer. He said he did not send the money.
“Unfortunately for Kimberly Guilfoyle, at that time, at that moment in time, I didn’t have $100,000 to spare to give to Kimberly Guilfoyle, or I actually would have been a dumbass enough to do it,” Deters told the outlet.
Sources familiar with the matter told CBS News that White House officials had been informed that the text messages were authentic. Some Trump aides reportedly expressed displeasure over Guilfoyle’s alleged actions.
However, Guilfoyle’s lawyer disputed the authenticity of the messages in comments to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the matter.
Guilfoyle, the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., was nominated by Trump to serve as the US ambassador to Greece. Her Senate confirmation hearing took place in July 2025, and she was confirmed in September of that year.
She was also highly visible during Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Greece last week.
Rubio declined to comment on the matter when questioned by reporters, saying he would not comment on a story that had been published only a few hours earlier.
Trump’s remarks indicate that Guilfoyle’s position could be under consideration following the reported dispute. However, the payment request remains disputed, and the allegations have not been established as proven wrongdoing.
