The United Kingdom has warned its citizens against travelling to parts of 11 Nigerian states, while advising against all but essential travel to parts of 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja, citing security concerns.
The warning is contained in the latest Nigeria travel advice published by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and updated on August 20, 2026.
The FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East, as well as Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West.
In the South-East and South-South, the UK warned against all travel to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. It described the affected locations as river and swamp areas accessible by boat but not by road.
The UK also advised against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states in the North-West and North-East regions.
In the North-Central, the advisory covered Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states, while the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja, was also placed under the all-but-essential travel warning.
In the South-East and South-South, Abia, Anambra and Imo states were similarly affected, alongside non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.
The FCDO cautioned that “No travel can be guaranteed safe”, urging British citizens planning to visit Nigeria to research their destinations and read the latest travel advice before travelling.
It also advised travellers to obtain appropriate travel insurance, warning that insurance policies could be invalidated if travellers visit areas against FCDO advice.
The UK government further said travel insurance should cover the traveller’s itinerary, planned activities and emergency expenses.
The updated advisory also contains information on IVF, fertility treatment scams and overseas adoption, as well as entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health and access to assistance while in Nigeria.
