Two of world football’s most lethal strikers, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, will go head-to-head on Friday as France and Norway battle for top spot in Group I at the World Cup.
The eagerly anticipated clash at Foxborough, outside Boston, promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the tournament, with both teams already through to the knockout stage but determined to finish first and secure a more favourable path.
Real Madrid forward Mbappe and Manchester City striker Haaland have lit up the competition, scoring four goals each in the race for the Golden Boot, trailing only Lionel Messi, who leads with five.
France enter the encounter with a slight advantage after dominant victories over Senegal and Iraq. Thanks to a superior goal difference, Les Bleus need only a draw to finish top of the group.
Norway, however, have been equally impressive, defeating Iraq 4-1 before edging Senegal 3-2 to set up the decisive showdown.
Playing in his first World Cup, Haaland has embraced the global stage with fearless performances and clinical finishing. Despite Norway’s impressive run, the 25-year-old insisted he remains realistic about his team’s chances against tournament favourites France.
“We’ve won 12 competitive games in a row. I’m part of something special, making history, and I’m extremely proud to be Norwegian,” Haaland said, adding that he believes France remain favourites to lift the trophy.
France’s preparations have been overshadowed by the temporary departure of head coach Didier Deschamps following the death of his mother. Assistant coach Guy Stephan will lead the team until Deschamps returns.
Stephan said the squad remains focused despite the emotional circumstances, expressing support for Deschamps and his family.
For France, the stakes extend beyond finishing first. A second-place finish could hand them a much tougher knockout route, including a potential last-32 clash with Ivory Coast, followed by possible meetings with Brazil, England and Argentina before the final.
Elsewhere on Friday, Spain will seek to secure first place in Group H when they face Uruguay in Guadalajara, while Uruguay need at least a point to keep their hopes of reaching the last 32 alive after drawing 2-2 with Cape Verde.
Cape Verde, one of the tournament’s surprise packages, will look to continue their fairytale run against Saudi Arabia.
In Group G, Egypt will aim to finish top of the group with victory over Iran in Seattle in a match surrounded by controversy after it was designated as the city’s “Pride Match.” Iranian and Egyptian officials have both objected to the associated Pride celebrations.
Belgium, led by experienced stars Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, will also be chasing a place in the knockout rounds when they take on New Zealand.
