Tottenham’s nightmare start to the Premier League season has deepened after Newcastle United handed them a 2-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side without a point or a goal from their opening two matches.
Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa struck in the second half as Newcastle turned a goalless first period into a convincing victory, piling more pressure on Tottenham after their 3-0 defeat to Brentford last weekend.
Tottenham showed greater improvement in the first half and created several opportunities, but Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek produced a series of important saves to keep the visitors in the game.
Hornicek denied Mathys Tel and Andy Robertson, while he also needed two attempts to deal with Jan Paul van Hecke’s header. Pedro Porro was also prevented from making progress by an excellent recovery tackle from Lewis Hall as the first half ended without a goal.
Newcastle returned after the break with greater purpose and began to put Tottenham under sustained pressure. Hall came close with a curling effort from around 20 yards before Elanga finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute.
Elanga turned inside the right side of the penalty area after Amar Dedic headed Nico Gonzalez’s long pass into his path. His left-footed effort struck the inside of the far post before slowly crossing the line to give Newcastle the lead.
Tottenham struggled to respond, and Newcastle doubled their advantage 10 minutes later.
Wissa finished beyond Kinsky after substitute Nick Woltemade knocked the ball down at the far post following a deep corner. The goal silenced the home crowd and left Tottenham with little time to find a way back into the contest.
The defeat leaves Spurs at the foot of the early Premier League standings, with no points and no goals from their first two matches. Newcastle, meanwhile, climbed to third after recording their first competitive victory under manager Matthias Jaissle.
Elanga and Wissa find new lease of life
Following Tottenham’s disappointing opening-day defeat to Brentford, De Zerbi made five changes to his starting lineup — the first time Spurs had made that many changes between their first two Premier League matches of a season.
Omar Marmoush was among the new additions, while Newcastle also handed an immediate debut to Nico following his move from Manchester City earlier in the week.
Jaissle’s changes ultimately proved more effective as Newcastle secured their fourth victory in their last five Premier League visits to Tottenham.
The Magpies have now won 14 away league games against Spurs, more than against any other club.
Wissa once again proved a difficult opponent for Tottenham, scoring his third goal in his last four Premier League appearances against them. The forward appears to have rediscovered his best form after a difficult 2025-26 season.
Woltemade also made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, providing the assist for Wissa with his first touch.
Elanga, meanwhile, has made an impressive start to the new campaign after struggling to make a major impact during his debut season at Newcastle. His goal against Spurs made him the first Newcastle player to score in each of the club’s opening two Premier League matches since Alan Shearer in 2003-04.
Newcastle will hope Elanga can maintain his form when they host Bournemouth next week, while Tottenham travel to Nottingham Forest with pressure already mounting on De Zerbi after two defeats without scoring.
