Mbappe’s Late Winner Sinks Barcelona in El Clasico

Kylian Mbappe scored twice, including an 87th-minute winner, as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 in a dramatic El Clasico encounter to claim bragging rights and strengthen their position in the La Liga title race.

The French forward opened the scoring in the 41st minute before Barcelona captain Raphinha restored parity in the 61st minute. However, Mbappe struck again three minutes from time to secure a crucial away victory for Madrid.

The defeat dealt a setback to Barcelona’s hopes of maintaining their perfect start to the La Liga season, while Madrid gained a significant advantage in the battle for the title.

Both teams started aggressively, creating opportunities in an entertaining first half. Barcelona threatened through Raphinha and Anthony Gordon, but Real Madrid goalkeeper Andrii Lunin dealt with their efforts to keep his side in the contest.

Madrid gradually grew into the game, with Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler contributing to their attacking moves.

The visitors eventually took the lead in the 41st minute when Mbappe capitalised on a defensive mishap. Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance struck the Frenchman and deflected into the net, giving Madrid the advantage.

Barcelona had an opportunity to respond before the break, but Lamine Yamal failed to convert a promising chance. Mbappe also struck the post shortly afterwards, although the offside flag had already been raised.

Barcelona returned for the second half determined to get back into the match, while Madrid continued to threaten on the counter-attack.

The hosts found their breakthrough in the 61st minute when Raphinha finished off a well-worked corner routine to bring the score to 1-1.

The equaliser gave Barcelona renewed confidence, and they continued searching for a second goal. Lunin, however, produced an important save to deny Martin’s header, while Yamal struggled to make the most of his opportunities in front of goal.

Despite Barcelona’s pressure, Madrid remained dangerous whenever they moved forward.

With the match heading towards a draw, Madrid delivered the decisive blow in the 87th minute. Eduardo Camavinga drove into the penalty area before passing to Mbappe, who calmly finished to put the visitors ahead for the second time.

The late goal silenced Barcelona supporters and sparked celebrations among Madrid’s players and coaching staff, with Jose Mourinho marking the decisive moment with a knee-slide celebration.

Barcelona attempted to find another equaliser in the closing stages but could not prevent Madrid from securing the victory.

Mbappe’s outstanding performance came shortly before the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, placing him in the spotlight alongside Barcelona youngster Yamal.

Although his opening goal involved a fortunate deflection, his second strike demonstrated his ability to deliver under pressure. The brace also continued Mbappe’s impressive scoring record against Barcelona since joining Madrid, taking his tally to five goals in two appearances against the Catalan side.

Yamal, meanwhile, endured a difficult evening, failing to convert several opportunities as Barcelona struggled to make their attacking pressure count.

The victory represents a significant result for Madrid, who denied Barcelona the opportunity to extend their advantage in the La Liga title race.

For Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, the defeat adds to a difficult spell after his side also suffered a Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain during the week.

Madrid, meanwhile, will take confidence from their ability to withstand Barcelona’s pressure and score the decisive goal late in the match.

With Mbappe leading the attack and Camavinga providing the crucial assist, Real Madrid left El Clasico with bragging rights after a dramatic 2-1 victory.
