AC Milan and Italy legend Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, bringing an end to the life of one of football’s greatest defenders. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the football world.

On the international stage, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy, winning the 1982 FIFA World Cup and playing a pivotal role at the 1990 World Cup and the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
One of the defining moments of his career came in the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil. At the age of 34, Baresi returned just three weeks after knee surgery to produce a heroic defensive display over 120 minutes, despite not being fully fit. Italy eventually lost the final on penalties.
