Rising petrol, diesel and aviation fuel prices are weighing on energy consumption across Nigeria, with daily demand for petrol falling by 25 per cent and aviation fuel consumption dropping by 41 per cent in July.
The latest figures are contained in the July Fact Sheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) on Monday.
According to the regulator, daily Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, consumption fell from 47.4 million litres per day (MLD) in June to 37.6 MLD in July, representing a 25 per cent decline.
Daily Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), or diesel, consumption also dropped by nine per cent, from 16.0 MLD to 14.7 MLD during the period.
The sharpest decline was recorded in Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK), commonly known as aviation fuel, with daily consumption falling by 41 per cent from 2.9 MLD in June to 1.7 MLD in July.
The development came amid higher prices for petrol, diesel and ATK, which affected consumption as households, motorists, businesses and other users adjusted to increased energy costs.
In July, petrol prices ranged between N1,131 and N1,350 per litre, while diesel prices stood between N1,440 and N1,670 per litre.
ATK prices were also significantly higher, ranging from N1,750 to N2,650 per litre during the month.
However, consumption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, increased during the period.
Daily LPG consumption rose by seven per cent, from 3.8 kilotonnes per day (KT/D) in June to 4.1 KT/D in July.
The contrasting figures reflect changing energy consumption patterns across Nigeria as consumers and businesses respond to rising fuel prices and adjust their energy use and spending.
