Security personnel at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin, Kwara State, foiled a stowaway attempt on Wednesday, arresting a man who tried to hide beneath a plane preparing for takeoff. The suspect, identified as Segun Martins, was apprehended at around 3:02 p.m. after gaining unauthorized access to the airside and positioning himself near the wheels of an Overland Airways aircraft taxiing for departure.
Mr. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the incident on his verified X account, explaining that Martins tried to hide between the aircraft’s tires in a desperate bid to flee the country.
He was subsequently handed over to operatives of the Airport Police Command for interrogation and further investigation.
Achimugu said, “At approximately 1502 hours, a male, identified as Segun Martins, gained unauthorized access to the foot of an Overland aircraft that was about taxi for takeoff and attempted to conceal himself between the aircraft tires.
“Ground security apprehended the individual. He was immediately handed over to the Airport Police for further investigation.
“Mr. Segun Martins claimed he believed the aircraft was headed for the United States and planned to escape by hiding on it,” Achimugu said, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing
