Former West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has opened up on the emotional reasons behind his decision to turn down Manchester United and complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.
Fernandes joined Spurs for a then club-record £85 million after West Ham United’s relegation, despite attracting strong interest from both Tottenham and Manchester United.
Speaking to The Athletic, the Portuguese midfielder credited Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi for playing a decisive role in his transfer, revealing that the Italian’s constant support and personal approach convinced him to choose the north London club.
“The way he spoke with me and my family was very important for my decision. He was talking to me every day, and I’m very happy to work with him. I hope we can achieve great things together,” Fernandes said.
He explained that the decision was driven by trust and family values, noting that his parents do not speak English fluently.
“It was mainly about building a connection. My parents don’t speak English very well, so it was about emotions. He told me he would take care of me and be like a second father to me in England. I’m very happy to work with him,” he added.
Manchester United had targeted Fernandes as part of their midfield rebuild following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury. The Red Devils have since completed the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have continued their spending spree by breaking their transfer record once again, signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for £100 million, including add-ons, just days after securing Fernandes.
