Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in tourism, culture and the creative industries, describing the sectors as vital drivers of economic growth and stronger people-to-people relations.
The renewed pledge was made on Saturday during the 2026 China Tourism Day celebration hosted by the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, with diplomats, government officials, artists and tourism stakeholders in attendance.
Director of the China Cultural Centre, Yang Jianxing, said tourism remains a powerful tool for mutual understanding and global harmony. According to him, the 2026 theme, “Enjoying Quality Tourism, Exploring Beautiful Landscapes,” highlights the role of tourism in promoting intercultural dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
Yang referenced cultural landmarks shared by both nations, including China’s Great Wall and Mount Tai, alongside Nigeria’s Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove and Zuma Rock, as symbols of rich heritage and cultural pride.
He also highlighted collaborative initiatives such as the Happy Chinese New Year programmes and the China-Nigeria Cultural and Tourism Festivals, noting that the events have boosted cultural exchanges through exhibitions, performances and culinary showcases.
“These activities have not only strengthened friendship between our peoples but have also promoted the spirit of harmony, mutual respect and cultural inclusiveness,” he said.
Yang further stated that China is prepared to deepen engagement with Nigeria under the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, with fresh opportunities in heritage preservation, tourism promotion, cultural innovation and the creative economy.
Also speaking at the event, Abdulkarim Ibrahim described the celebration as another significant milestone in over five decades of diplomatic and cultural relations between Nigeria and China.
