The Supreme Court has affirmed the final forfeiture of $2.045 million and seven properties linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to the Federal Government.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, the apex court set aside an earlier decision of the Court of Appeal in Lagos, which had nullified the final forfeiture order granted by the Federal High Court.
The ruling restored the judgment of the Federal High Court, which granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) final forfeiture of the assets after the commission argued they were proceeds of unlawful activities.
The forfeited assets include seven prime properties located in Lagos and Delta states, as well as $2.045 million allegedly linked to Emefiele.
The Supreme Court’s judgment brings the legal battle over the assets to an end, affirming the Federal Government’s ownership of the forfeited properties and funds.
