Women for Women International Nigeria Calls for Stronger Support to End Women’s Poverty

Women for Women International Nigeria has renewed its call for stronger collaboration to improve the welfare of women across the country, urging stakeholders to intensify efforts to reduce poverty, promote inclusion and empower women, particularly those affected by conflict.

The appeal was made during the organisation’s 25th anniversary celebration, where its Country Director, Bukola Onyishi, highlighted the challenges confronting women and the urgent need for sustained support.

Speaking at the event, Onyishi said millions of women continue to face violence, displacement and hardship, noting that one in three women will experience physical or sexual violence during her lifetime.

“Imagine being pregnant while fleeing conflict, imagine being a young girl managing her monthly cycle in a displacement camp, imagine being elderly or living with disability, with nowhere to turn for safety,” she said.

Reflecting on the organisation’s impact over the past 25 years, Onyishi said Women for Women International Nigeria has empowered thousands of women to rebuild their confidence, establish businesses, educate their children, become community leaders and regain hope after surviving conflict and hardship.

International Board Member Rima Salah said women play a vital role in promoting peace and driving sustainable development. She explained that the Women, Peace and Security agenda is an international framework designed to address the unique impact of conflict on women and girls while encouraging their active participation in peacebuilding.

Salah urged stakeholders to continue amplifying the voices of Nigerian women so their stories of resilience, courage and success can inspire others around the world.

Also speaking, Chairman of Woodhall Capital Foundation, Vavo Hunponu-Wusu, said empowering women with opportunities and purpose enables them to become agents of transformation in their communities.

He called for renewed commitment to building a future where every woman has access to opportunities, every girl can pursue her dreams without limitations and every partnership delivers meaningful and lasting impact.
