Former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, has said he could be arrested for speaking what he described as the truth about Nigeria’s current situation.
Al-Mustapha made the remark on Saturday at the third memorial conference for the late General Hassan Usman Katsina in Kaduna, where he expressed concern over the worsening condition of Northern Nigeria and the country as a whole.
He accused northern leaders of abandoning the vision and ideals of the region’s founding fathers, saying the North was facing deep social, economic and leadership challenges.
According to him, “From every child on the street to the elites, we know that the state of Nigeria is in a sorry state. The state of the North is totally hopeless. Speaking the truth about the situation is meant for patriots.”
Al-Mustapha also criticised the poor attendance of northern governors at the conference, noting that the event’s theme, “From Sacrifice to Strategy,” should have attracted all the governors from the region.
“They don’t have the thinking, they don’t have the sacrifice, they don’t also have strategy for the country,” he said.
He further accused political leaders of failing to understand the responsibilities of leadership, warning that Nigeria’s governance system was in serious decline.
Addressing a representative of President Bola Tinubu, Al-Mustapha said, “The system is rotten; those who are in leadership positions don’t even understand what leadership is all about.”
He concluded by saying he was prepared to face any consequences for speaking openly about the country’s challenges.
