The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the interception of materials suspected to be explosive devices in Saki, a town located in the Oke Ogun area of the state.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, who said the driver of the truck transporting the items has been taken into custody.
Ayanlade explained that the suspected explosives were uncovered during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by police operatives in Saki, adding that the truck and the items were immediately secured and placed under police control.
He further stated that after being briefed on the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, directed a comprehensive investigation to determine the nature, source, and intended use of the materials.
Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit were deployed to safely handle and secure the items for forensic examination.
The police said detailed forensic analysis is ongoing to determine the exact nature of the materials and their intended purpose.
Meanwhile, the arrested driver is said to be cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
The incident comes on the heels of reports that a police inspector was killed on Saturday when suspected bandits ambushed a patrol team in Oyo State.
