South Africa’s Minister of Justice, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has expressed concern over the growing impact of international backlash against the country’s stance on illegal immigration, warning that South African artistes are beginning to lose performance opportunities abroad.
Speaking during a press briefing in Pretoria, Kubayi said several South African artistes have experienced cancelled international shows as perceptions linked to xenophobic incidents and immigration policies continue to affect the country’s image globally.
The minister stressed that the South African government is not targeting legal foreign nationals but is focused on the repatriation of illegal immigrants in line with its immigration laws.
According to her, the government is actively working to clarify its position and engage with international partners to address misunderstandings surrounding the issue.
Kubayi added that authorities are providing support to affected citizens and businesses while also tackling the broader diplomatic and economic consequences arising from the backlash.
She noted that efforts are ongoing to reduce tensions, restore confidence, and protect the interests of South Africans whose livelihoods depend on international engagements, particularly in the entertainment industry.
