Nigerian music mogul Don Jazzy has opened up about his struggles in the industry, revealing that the collapse of Mo’Hits Records in 2012 nearly led him to abandon his music career and relocate abroad.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy credited his friends for encouraging him to stay and start anew, which eventually led to the birth of Mavin Records
When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me,” he said.
The Birth and Rise of Mavin Records
Following the Mo’Hits split, Don Jazzy founded Mavin Records, which became home to many former Mo’Hits artists such as Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince, as well as new stars like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korode Bello, and Di’ja.
Today, Mavin Records boasts a thriving roster, including Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, Magixx, Boy Spyce, Bayanni, Johnny Drille, and DJ Big N.
Global Recognition and Expansion
In 2024, Universal Music Group announced a majority investment in Mavin Global, further accelerating the label’s expansion and solidifying its place as a powerhouse in African music.
