Paul Merson, a former Arsenal midfielder, has tipped two Premier League clubs as strong contenders to reach the UEFA Champions League final this season, predicting a deep run for English sides in the competition.
He noted that he would not be surprised to see an all-English final in the Champions League, especially if the knockout-stage draws favour the Premier League clubs.
Merson made the remarks following the conclusion of this week’s Champions League matches, highlighting the growing strength and competitiveness of English teams in Europe.
At the moment, apart from Manchester City, the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Chelsea are currently in the top eight on the Champions League table.
“There is no competition that is as hard as the Premier League. Liverpool winning comfortably in the Champions League against Marseille proves it,” Merson said via Sportskeeda.
Barring Manchester City, the remaining five English teams are all currently sitting in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League table, underlining the Premier League’s strong showing in the competition.
“I wouldn’t even be surprised if we see an all-English final this season, provided the knockout draws go in favour of our teams,” Merson said.
